Perhaps not surprisingly, the band's follow-up, 2010's Come Around Sundown, while by no means a disappointment, seemed strained, as if the band was trying too hard to balance its early sound with its later hits, all while digging even deeper into its Southern roots. Which is partly why the band's sixth studio album, 2013's Mechanical Bull, comes as sweet relief. While still retaining Kings of Leon's penchant toward bombastic, hooky choruses and driving guitars, Mechanical Bull feels breezier and less labored than Come Around Sundown. Even the title feels like a cheeky double entendre that references both the band's Southern upbringing (lead singer Caleb Followill and his bandmate siblings were raised in Oklahoma and Tennessee) and the gear-like machinations of the rock industry. Front-loading an album with the leadoff single can often be a sign of weakness in a release, but not in this case. Kicking off with the passionate \"Supersoaker\" merely sets the tone for this album. In fact, two of the best cuts come midway through, with the yearning \"Wait for Me\" and the bluesy, Primal Scream-esque \"Family Tree.\" Elsewhere, \"Rock City\" brings a heavy Mott the Hoople vibe to the fore and the raging \"Coming Back Again\" finds the band delving into War-era U2. Followill's lazy, idiosyncratic phrasing and intonation admirably take Kings of Leon out of the realm of potentially similar bands, with singers who are content to yelp and imitate. Survivor's guilt, realizing one's destiny, and a Snoop Dogg performance of Doggystyle caliber are woven among it all; plus, highlights offer that Parliament-Funkadelic-styled subversion, as \"The Blacker the Berry\" (\"The sweeter the juice\") offers revolutionary slogans and dips for the hip. That decision was eventually reversed; hence she re-recorded the originally intended lyrics. And while the arrangement is similar, there are added layers of synth and percussion. Her voice is absent the wails and hiccupy gasps of her youthful incarnation. These have been replaced by somewhat huskier, even more luxuriant and elegant tones. On the latter song, the arrangement of a full band and Michael Nyman's strings are replaced by a sparse, reverbed electric piano which pans between speakers. This skeletal arrangement frames Bush's more prominent vocal which has grown into these lyrics and inhabits them in full: their regrets, disappointments, and heartbreaks with real acceptance. She lets that voice rip on \"Lilly,\" supported by a tougher, punchier bassline, skittering guitar efx, and a hypnotic drum loop. Bush's son Bertie makes an appearance as the voice of the computer (with Auto-Tune) on \"Deeper Understanding.\" On \"RubberBand Girl,\" Bush pays homage to the Rolling Stones' opening riff from \"Street Fighting Man\" in all its garagey glory (which one suspects was always there and has now been uncovered). Nashville wants one to tell it true as long as that telling conforms to the template, which Musgraves isn't likely to do. \"Merry Go 'Round\" might be the best song here, but there are others that are nearly as good, like the lilting, wise opener, \"Silver Lining,\" the implausible \"Dandelion\" (one wonders how she manages to make such a winning song out of such a metaphor, but she does), and the gutsy (and again, wise) \"Follow Your Arrow,\" all of which feature clear-eyed observations, unintrusive but appropriate arrangements, and a certain flair for telling it like it is and making it sound like bedrock, obvious wisdom.
