His longtime friend and producer of the two hugely-acclaimed albums by Nathaniel Rateliff \u0026amp; the Night Sweats thus gave poignant inspiration to these ten new songs, on which, now in his solo voice, Rateliff wears his grief and doubt on his sleeve, but always retains a sense of optimism.\u003cbr\u003eThe tracks on\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eAnd It's Still Alright\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eare quieter and more reflective than the exuberant soul with which the Night Sweats made their name, but have the same urgency and indelible appeal, exploring themes of love, loss and perseverance. The title track, written by Rateliff specifically about Swift, exudes a haunting grace and acceptance, and features a Rett Rogers-directed video.\u003cbr\u003e\"I think I always want to see hope in the darkness, and I like to try to share that,\" says Rateliff. \"I always try to write from a perspective of trying to approach everything very honestly, even if it leaves me vulnerable. But overall, it's almost like I'm a different character when I'm writing for myself.\u003cbr\u003e\"I think this album is a reminder that we all go through hardship, but regardless of the hardship everything ends up where it's supposed to. I still continue to live, and I still continue to find joy. They've played from coast to coast and beyond. Their debut achieved gold status -- something quite rare in the digital age (especially for a first outing). In addition, their singles \"S.O.B.\" \"I Need Never Get Old,\" and \"Look It Here\" have all received massive airplay and streaming. This EP is what happens when a band has to have something new to sell while on the road and doesn't have enough time to cut a proper follow-up album. A Little Something More From is an eight-track stopgap. As such, it's pretty much a fans-only affair. The first three tunes were recorded in a Colorado living room and produced by drummer Patrick Meese. All are studio versions of concert favorites, including the horn-drenched rave-up \"Parlor,\" the Little Willie John-esque fingerpopper \"I Did It,\" and the soul review-styled second version of \"Out on the Weekend\" (sequenced first). The live version of \"Wasting Time\" was cut at the Stax Soul Museum by Sirius XM. This tune has an intro and middle eight that comes uncomfortably close to the Band's \"The Weight,\" while the melody adds up to what Jackson Browne's \"These Days\" would sound like arranged for horns and a stronger singer. \"What I Need\" is a B-side from the Howling at Nothing EP -- and sounds like it. The Richard Swift-produced \"Just to Talk to You\" is a solo acoustic blues that harkens back to Rateliff's years as a solo singer\/songwriter with Rounder. He obviously likes Lightnin' Hopkins. The set closer is \"Late Night Party (Out on the Weekend, Version I),\" a slow, intimate, stripped-down shuffler; it's like the demo version of its earlier counterpart. On BORN AGAIN, the whole rap world turns out to pay tribute at this latest reverent, raucous wake.\r\nBiggie still eerily fills the center of this rap universe with Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Busta Rhymes, and other luminaries from both coasts and various camps filling in the rhymes around him. Tracks like the Duran Duran-sampled \"Notorious B.I.G.\" and \"Dead Wrong\" are perfect showcases for Biggie's patented lumbering and relaxed baritone flow. In Utero, of course, turned out to be their last record, and it's hard not to hear it as Kurt Cobain's suicide note, since Albini's stark, uncompromising sound provides the perfect setting for Cobain's bleak, even nihilistic, lyrics. Even if the album wasn't a literal suicide note, it was certainly a conscious attempt to shed their audience -- an attempt that worked, by the way, since the record had lost its momentum when Cobain died in the spring of 1994. Even though the band tempered some of Albini's extreme tactics in a remix, the record remains a deliberately alienating experience, front-loaded with many of its strongest songs, then descending into a series of brief, dissonant squalls before concluding with \"All Apologies,\" which only gets sadder with each passing year. Throughout it all, Cobain's songwriting is typically haunting, and its best moments rank among his finest work, but the over-amped dynamicism of the recording seems like a way to camouflage his dispiritedness -- as does the fact that he consigned such great songs as \"Verse Chorus Verse\" and \"I Hate Myself and Want to Die\" to compilations, when they would have fit, even illuminated the themes of In Utero. Even without those songs, In Utero remains a shattering listen, whether it's viewed as Cobain's farewell letter or self-styled audience alienation. Few other records are as willfully difficult as this. Though Rateliff has displayed emotion in his vocals since the beginning, even fans have never heard him like this. Influences from Sam \u0026amp; Dave to Van Morrison to Sam Cooke range freely on this set -- and he has the voice to pull it off. The sessions were helmed by producer Richard Swift, who captured Rateliff and his large band -- complete with a swaggering horn section (and occasionally subtle strings) -- with just enough reverb to make it sound live. \"I've Been Falling,\" with its upright piano and handclaps, delves deep into vintage Morrison territory without really emulating him (though Rateliff comes closer on the album's last track, \"Mellow Out\"). The raw soul passion in \"Trying So Hard Not to Know\" evokes the historic Stax ethos perfectly, while sidling up to the Band's Big Pink era. \"S.O.B.\" has verses saturated in Southern gospel, with foot stomping and handclaps as the only accompaniment, before the entire band erupts in a carousing chorus. This reverses gospel's usual Saturday-night-to-Sunday-morning course; it is one of the rowdiest broken-heart songs you'll ever hear. \"I'd Be Waiting\" is a tender, wide-open love song with a late-night jazzy soul feel. The singer's voice is haunted equally by the spirits of Cooke and Bobby \"Blue\" Bland. If this album has a weakness -- and it does -- it's that Rateliff's use of these forms and styles in his writing is not only basic -- which is fine -- but overly formulaic. Only the pedal steel-driven Americana in the absolutely lovely \"Wasting Time\" -- which recalls the Gregg Allman of Laid Back -- deviates; one or two more songs in this vein (especially with this band) would have made all the difference. That's a small complaint, one that will deter few.
