As on Fuego, Ezrin has a good handle on the band, knowing how and when to showcase their legendary live prowess, but also how to spin Phish's studio efforts into something distinctive and polished without losing their charm. The warm melancholy of Trey Anastasio's \"Miss You\" and the thunderous rock of Jon Fishman's opening salvo, \"Friends,\" each play well through the filter of the man who produced 70s titans like Alice Cooper, Kiss, and Pink Floyd. All are studio versions of concert favorites, including the horn-drenched rave-up \"Parlor,\" the Little Willie John-esque fingerpopper \"I Did It,\" and the soul review-styled second version of \"Out on the Weekend\" (sequenced first). The live version of \"Wasting Time\" was cut at the Stax Soul Museum by Sirius XM. This tune has an intro and middle eight that comes uncomfortably close to the Band's \"The Weight,\" while the melody adds up to what Jackson Browne's \"These Days\" would sound like arranged for horns and a stronger singer. \"What I Need\" is a B-side from the Howling at Nothing EP -- and sounds like it. The Richard Swift-produced \"Just to Talk to You\" is a solo acoustic blues that harkens back to Rateliff's years as a solo singer\/songwriter with Rounder. He obviously likes Lightnin' Hopkins. Front-loading an album with the leadoff single can often be a sign of weakness in a release, but not in this case. Kicking off with the passionate \"Supersoaker\" merely sets the tone for this album. Throughout it all, Urie paints himself with Michelangelo-esque strokes as a flamboyant cross between James Cagney, Biggie Smalls, and Beyonc?, singing \"I'm a moon-walker, I'm like M.J. up in the clouds\" on \"Dancing's Not a Crime.\" He also has the same obsessions: religious iconography, the lure of Los Angeles, and the constant struggle between social concern and personal interest. As he sings on the anthemic \"Say Amen (Saturday Night),\" \"And if I try to change my life one more day, there would be nobody else to save\/And I can't change into a person I don't wanna be, so\/Oh, it's Saturday night.\" The rest of the album pulses with an equal level of throw-your-hands-in-the-air energy, as Urie soars through the arrangements, his voice as highly resonant and stage-ready as ever.
