A Broke Down Melody, directed by Chris Malloy, takes us on a journey through Jamaica, Hawaii, Indonesia, Tahiti, South America and Mexico, where waves are plentiful and crowds are extremely hard to find, which in no way is a bad thing. This surfing movie follows a tribe of surfers and they're journey and experiences while they surf insanely good waves on all sorts of boards, and the stoke they get when they pass it down on to the next generation.
Featuring surfing by Kelly Slater, Tom Curren, Gerry Lopez, Rob Machado, The Malloys, CJ Hobgood, Jack Johnson and others.
A Broke Down Melody soundtrack includes two new tracks from Jack Johnson as well as an alternate version of the track "Breakdown." The original version of this track was included on Johnson's multi-platinum release In Between Dreams and was written while traveling to Chile to surf with his childhood hero Gerry Lopez for the film.
Thankfully, the soundtrack steers away from hackneyed traditional surf music and the in-your-face rock and metal associated with extreme sports. Instead, thoughtful, folk-leaning troubadours such as M. Ward and Kings of Convenience are included, reflecting the more spiritual side of surfing, which — as Broke Down Melody shows — is as much a philosophy as a sport. Highlights include an unreleased song by Eddie Vedder, new music from Matt Costa and tracks from Kings of Convenience, The Beta Band, M. Ward, Doug Martsch, and many others.
